Hollywood is mourning the death of actress Hayden Panettiere, who has died at just 36 years old.
Panettiere’s family confirmed her death through her representative, describing the actress as a remarkable person who brought love, energy and happiness to the lives of those who knew her and the millions who followed her career.
The cause and circumstances of her death have not been publicly revealed. She died on August 16, 2026.
For millions of television viewers, Panettiere will forever be remembered as Claire Bennet from Heroes, the seemingly ordinary cheerleader who discovers she has the extraordinary ability to heal herself. The role turned her into one of the recognizable young stars of late-2000s television.
She went on to take another major role in Nashville, playing Juliette Barnes, a talented but troubled country music singer. Her performance earned her two Golden Globe nominations.
Her acting credits also included Remember the Titans, I Love You, Beth Cooper, Scream 4 and Scream VI. She began working in entertainment as a child and continued performing for more than three decades.
But behind her Hollywood success was a deeply personal struggle that Panettiere eventually chose to share publicly.
In her 2026 memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, she discussed addiction, postpartum depression, recovery and domestic abuse. She also spoke about the difficult decision to relinquish custody of her daughter, Kaya, to the child’s father, former Ukrainian boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko, in 2018 while she worked on her recovery.
Panettiere had also been open about the devastating death of her younger brother, actor Jansen Panettiere, who died in 2023 at 28.
Her willingness to speak about addiction, motherhood, trauma and recovery made her story extend far beyond her work on television and film. In recent interviews, she appeared determined to tell her own story on her own terms.
