Suspected Irish crime boss Daniel Kinahan is back in Ireland and in custody after being extradited from Dubai to face a serious criminal charge.
The 49-year-old appeared before Dublin’s Special Criminal Court on Sunday, accused of directing the activities of a criminal organisation between October 2015 and April 2017.
Kinahan was flown into Ireland on an Irish government aircraft from the United Arab Emirates before being taken under heavy police escort to the Criminal Courts of Justice in Dublin.
Security around the court was visibly tight, with a convoy of blacked-out police vehicles moving in and out of the complex.
Following the hearing, Kinahan was remanded in custody. He told the court: “I think we all know I won’t be getting bail.”
The case is connected to the wider investigation into the Kinahan organised crime network, which has been linked by international law-enforcement agencies to drug and firearms trafficking on a global scale.
Kinahan’s next court appearance is scheduled for 5 October.
The extradition and court appearance represent a major development in a case that has attracted international attention for years.
