The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department (SLMPD) Homicide Division is asking for the public’s assistance in solving a homicide that occurred nearly five decades ago in south St. Louis.
At approximately 2 a.m. on August 30, 1980, 21-year-old Jerome Williams suffered blunt force trauma during an assault outside his residence in the 2700 block of Rutger Street. Jerome succumbed to his injuries the following day, August 31, 1980.
At the time of the incident, a 19-year-old male was arrested in connection with the assault. However, charges against the individual were taken under advisement and were never filed.
Several witnesses were reportedly present during the assault but told investigators they did not see or hear anything. Now, decades later, the Homicide Division is hopeful that someone who may have witnessed the incident—or remembers something that could help investigators—will come forward.
Any information, no matter how small it may seem, could help bring answers to Jerome’s family and provide the justice and closure they have been waiting for.
